Ricky Road: The open-source gaming community

Ricky Road. The open-source gaming community.

Giving something to the game developer

The idea is simple: give every game developer the ability to use community gaming features once only reserved for big buck mucky-mucks. Rankings, Achievements, Friends lists, micro-purchases and add-ons available to the arm-chair and basement game developers. Features that were once out of reach are available to anyone with a game idea and a little passion.

Code Untethered, Unfettered and Fancy Free

Only an open-source game community can offer the developer true freedom to just focus on their game. We do not force feed a proprietary network API on any game. When you develop a game, you are developing it for the Darkstar and Drupal Web Services API, not a proprietary closed source API. What this means to you is this: if you wish to pack up and leave Ricky Road and take your game with you, you may. And your game will work. Because it isn't boxed in and created specifically for Ricky Road it was created for a freely available solution that anyone can download and deploy for free. Ricky Road will give you the hardware and the community, the game is yours now and forever. We give you a stage, its your job to shine. It is very important to us that your game stays your game. And that means your intellectual property but it also means ensuring that your game does not depend on Rickyroad.com to run.

Do you have a game?

Good. So did we. And like you we wondered how we could make our little creation better. How could we allow people to enjoy our game if they are playing across the globe or just across the street. We wanted to enable our game to have the features we pictured when we imagined all the possibilities. And then we thought: I bet a lot of people would like this. So we opened it up. And here we are.

We are still currently under development but we will have an update shortly.  Please continue to check back.

But what about Ricky road, the actual road?

Thats the real Rickey Road. Now your probably asking yourself "why is the actual road spelled 'Rickey' with an e, and the website is spelled 'Ricky' without the e?". Excellent query. I also was shocked when I was on the phone with my mother talking about rickyroad.com and she informed me that I (the founder and ceo) had spelled it incorrectly. Of course this was brought to my attention LONG after I had filed incorporation papers with the state, bought domain names and bragged to everyone with ears about it. I guess it doesn't matter how old I get I still need my mom some times. Mom, if I misspell anything in this article please feel free to call me before the google bot gets here.

So why would anyone name it after this particular road? After all Broadway and Main street are much more cosmopolitan names. Well the answer is simple. Rickey Road in Kansas City is haunted. Not like ohh it's so cute its haunted. It's really haunted. No seriously. Haunted. You can ask just about anyone from east side Kansas City and they know what Rickey Road is. They probably have a story about it too. We used to take freshman to Rickey Road at night, dare them to do a Chinese fire-drill, wait till they get out of the car, and just drive off. Good times.
